Access to Work

If you have a disability, you might need support or additional equipment so you can do your job. Help is available whether you are working, looking for work, or about to start work. If you qualify, Access to Work might be able to help provide you and your employer with advice and help with extra costs to make sure you can work to your full potential.

Job Shops

The Council is working with key local partners including Jobcentre Plus, employment and skills providers and employers to help more people into sustainable work. Over the next 10 years Barking and Dagenham Council and its partners aim to stimulate the creation of 10,000 new jobs in the borough and to equip local people with the skills needed to compete for them.

Tomorrow's People is a charity that helps people who are claiming Incapacity Benefits or Employment and Support Allowance. They work to help people find and keep work. They provide one-to-one support and advice on many aspects of job hunting.

Jobcentre Plus is now available on the public services website Direct.gov.uk.

Their staff are trained to help you find the right kind of work, whatever it is you are looking for. They can also offer help and support if you cannot work, and advice on what benefits you might be able to get.

Support for people with a disability

If you have a disability you can speak to a Disability Employment Advisor (DEA). They work for Jobcentre Plus and can give you specialist support. They can tell you about suitable jobs and training programmes, and provide help and support whatever your situation is. Your DEA will help you to find work or gain new skills even if you have little or no work experience or haven't worked for a long time.
