Flu Jabs for Carers

The seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and the person you care for from flu, and will prevent you being stopped from being able to care.

If you are caring for someone you may be concerned about how being ill will affect you as a carer and the person you are caring for.

Carers are eligible to receive the seasonal flu vaccine free each winter.

If you are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person who may be put at risk if you fall ill, and/or you are in receipt of carers allowance you should be offered a flu jab. This will be at your GP’s discretion depending on your need.

The following people should also be offered a flu jab:

Those age 65 and over

Those aged six months or over who are in a clinical risk group (if you have health problems of your own, your GP should check to see if you fall into one of these groups)

Those living in a long stay residential care home or other long stay facilities where the infection could spread easily and put lives at risk (this doesn’t include prisons, young offender institutions or university halls of residence).

The British Heart Foundation

The British Heart Foundation provide useful resources to enable us to better look after our health, the following provide information of how too much salt can be a bad thing.

How does eating salt affect my heart?

Eating too much salt can raise your blood pressure.

High blood pressure puts added force against the walls of your arteries (the blood vessels that carry blood away from your heart).

Over time this extra pressure can damage the arteries, which makes them more likely to become narrowed and hardened by fatty deposits.

When this happens to your coronary arteries (the arteries that supply your heart muscle with oxygen-rich blood) this is coronary heart disease, which can lead to angina and heart attack.

The adult guideline daily amount (GDA) of salt is 6gm

Top tips to cut down on salt

  • Use food labels to help you choose lower salt ingredients and meals
  • The amount of salt varies between brands so it’s important to use food labels to help you choose the healthier option.
  • Stop adding salt to your food at the table.
  • Choose alternatives to salt when you’re cooking or preparing food.
