LOOK AFTER YOURSELF - otherwise how will you carry on?

Caring for someone can be a stressful, as well as a rewarding, experience. In order that you do not become overwhelmed, here are a few hints.

SUPPORT
Accept help when it is offered! You never know, it may not be offered again. Try to speak up and say what would be of most help to you in your caring role.

TIME
Give yourself some space.  Allow yourself to switch off at a regular time each day.

Where possible stick to routines you had before you were a carer: hairdressers, barbers, shopping, hobbies etc should still be part of your everyday life. Once you stop these activities it is very difficult to re-start them.

DIET
Eat well balanced meals regularly. Too many carers forget themselves.

HEALTH
Don't neglect yourself.  Don't ignore the aches and pains: something simple may turn into something more serious, with long term implications for you.

ISOLATION
It is important that you do not lose contact with family and friends. It may be difficult to find time to visit, but try to make time to write a letter or make a telephone call.

EXERCISE
Get plenty of regular exercise. This doesn't mean you have to train for the marathon, but a brisk walk every day can make you feel and look better.

FEELING DOWN
Depression can creep up on you if you are not careful. If something is getting you down talk about it to someone. You can always contact us on 020 8593 4422 where you will find someone who will be happy to listen.

Remember who you are.   First and foremost you are a person, who also happens to be a carer.
