The national walking charity Living Streets has recently received funding to develop small walking groups with over 65’s in Barking & Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge over the next 3 years.
The focus of this Streets Apart programme is reconnecting older people with their community, reducing isolation, improving physical fitness and mental wellbeing. Walking and talking is easy and free with huge all round benefits. I imagine it might work well for family carers and the over 65’s that they look after -please note that we can involve people with early stage memory loss (dementia) but are not equipped to manage people who are more profoundly affected.
Throughout lockdown we’ve been building links with local services and recruiting volunteers. We plan to start our first walks in the Becontree, West side of Dagenham Heathway and the Goresbrook Park area in the first week of October.
