Young Carers Festival 2018 - STAND UP AND BE COUNTED

Tuesday, July 3, 2018 - 08:45

A Weekend to remember was lived again for 36 of our Young Carers. On Friday 29th June - Sunday 1st July, both Barking & Dagenham and Thurrock Young Carers projects were fortunate enough to attend the 19th annual Young Carers Festival in Southampton. This is our second time attending and it did not dissapoint. All of the Young Carers enjoyed a weekend of fun activities, social time and respite from their caring roles.  1,500 young carers from all over the country attended at the weekend long event and new friendships and opportunites were created all around.

On the Friday we were greeted by the friendly YMCA volunteers, who showed us to our camp site - where Dean set about putting up both of the staff tents!  Once we had all unpacked we went to check out our surroundings and were so suprised at the vast amount of stuff there was on offer to everyone!  We even had some performances on the main stage!

On Saturday the activities opened and this was where the real fun started.  The Young Carers had the choice of paddle boarding, climbing, Jacob's ladder, zip lining, arts and crafts, yoga sessions, holding snakes, spiders and owls and a show at the planetarium, to name just a few.  After dinner all of the Young Carers headed back to their tents to get ready for the night ahead where there was a choice of a movie night under the stars or our personal favourite the silent disco!  All this was happening along with fairground rides and entertainment.  The night was magical and everyone had an amazing time.

By Sunday we were all sad to be saying goodbye to the new people we had met. Overall the group had an amazing time and an unbeatable experience. PLEASE SEE BELOW WHAT OUR YOUNG CARERS HAD TO SAY ABOUT THE WEEKEND:
